The first cold morning of fall has a way of sneaking up on Long Island. One day the windows are open, and the next you are standing in the basement squinting at the tank gauge, wondering whether you have enough oil to get through the week and who you are going to call if you don’t.
If you are new to the area, new to oil heat, or just ready for a simpler way to keep your home warm, this post is written for you. It is our first on this blog, so we wanted to use it to introduce ourselves properly: who we are, where we deliver across Long Island, how ordering works, and what you can expect the first time one of our trucks pulls into your driveway.
We will keep it practical. By the end, you should know exactly how to place an order, how to pay, and what to have ready before your first delivery.

A Family Company Long Island Has Trusted for 70 Years
COD Delivery is a family-owned heating oil company, and Long Island homeowners have been counting on us for 70 years. That kind of track record is not built on marketing. It comes from showing up when the weather turns, answering the phone when a tank runs dry, and treating customers the way you would treat a neighbor, because in most cases that is exactly who they are.
Oil heat remains a big part of life in this part of the country. Of all the U.S. homes that rely on heating oil as their main source of heat, about 82% are in the Northeast, and Long Island has plenty of them. Many of the houses we deliver to have been heated with oil for generations, and plenty of the families in them have been ordering from us for just as long.
Being around that long does not mean standing still. We have grown and changed with the times, too, adding simple 24/7 online ordering and full heating and cooling service. The goal has stayed the same the whole time: dependable fuel, fair and transparent pricing, and service you do not have to chase.
Where We Deliver: Great Neck to Greenport
Our service area runs the length of the Island, from Great Neck on the North Shore of Nassau all the way out to Greenport on the North Fork. In practical terms, that covers homes in these towns:
- Nassau County: the Towns of North Hempstead, Hempstead, and Oyster Bay
- Western and central Suffolk: the Towns of Babylon, Huntington, Islip, Smithtown, and Brookhaven
- Eastern Suffolk and the East End: the Towns of Riverhead, Southold, Southampton, East Hampton, and Shelter Island
Whether you are in a split-level in Levittown, a Cape on a quiet street in Smithtown, or a farmhouse out past Riverhead, the ordering process and the pricing approach are the same. If you are not sure whether your street is covered, give us a call and we will tell you in a minute or two.
What Does “COD” Mean for Heating Oil?
COD stands for cash on delivery. In the heating oil world, it describes a simple way of buying fuel: you order oil when you need it and pay for that order, with no service contract, no annual commitment, and no automatic program you have to cancel later.
The alternative most homeowners have run into is a contract account, where you agree to a pricing plan or a delivery program for the season. Those plans work for some households. Others would rather keep things flexible and decide for themselves when to order and how much to buy. That flexibility is what the COD model is built around.
Do I Need to Sign a Contract?
No. There is nothing to sign and nothing to renew. You can order once this winter, every few weeks, or only when a cold snap sends the gauge lower than you would like. Each order stands on its own. With no seasonal plan to manage, the timing is always your call.
How to Place Your First Order
Ordering is designed to take a few minutes. You have two options:
- Order online through our online ordering portal, which is available around the clock.
- Call us at (855) 426-3645 (855-4CODOIL) and we will walk you through it.
You will choose either a specific number of gallons or a fill. Current per-gallon pricing is posted on our homepage and in the portal. Rates change with the market, so check there before you order rather than relying on a number you saw last month. If you have a question about order minimums, the portal or a quick phone call will give you the current answer.
When Will My Oil Arrive?
When you place an order, you receive an estimated delivery date. Under normal weather and road conditions, that is typically within 48 to 72 hours. When you need oil sooner, same-day and next-day delivery are available as well.
Timing is worth thinking about before the season gets busy. Heating oil tanks are often filled in late summer or in early fall when prices are generally lower, and a first order placed in October usually arrives more smoothly than one placed in the middle of a January deep freeze, when delivery schedules across Long Island fill up fast.
Payment Methods We Accept
We accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover credit and debit cards. We also accept cash. If you plan to pay the driver in cash, please have the exact amount ready, since drivers cannot make change.
If you pay by card, you are charged when the order is placed. Choose a specific number of gallons and you are charged for that amount. Choose a fill and you are charged for your tank’s full capacity, then refunded for anything that does not fit. The price you see when you order is the price you pay, even if rates go up before the truck arrives.
What First-Time Customers Should Expect
A first delivery is simple, but a few details help it go smoothly.
- You usually do not need to be home. If the driver can reach the fill pipe for your tank, the delivery can happen while you are at work. In some areas, new customers may need to be present for a brief inspection before the first delivery.
- Your tank’s usable capacity may be a little less than its stated size. The driver fills to the maximum usable amount, and any undelivered portion of your order is refunded or credited.
- If your tank is completely empty, the system may need priming. That means bleeding air and debris out of the fuel lines so the burner can run safely again. It is one more reason to order before you hit bottom.
- If another company fills your tank before we arrive, cancel your order with us right away. A second delivery into a tank that is already full can cause a spill.
A good rule of thumb once you are set up: plan your next order when the gauge drops to about half. Ordering at that point keeps your tank from running low and leaves a cushion if a storm delays deliveries.
A Quick Checklist Before Your First Delivery
A few minutes of prep before the truck arrives saves time for everyone and helps the driver get in and out safely.
- Find your fill pipe. It is the capped pipe on the outside of the house, often near the driveway or along a side wall. Make sure it is easy to see and not buried behind shrubs, garden hoses, or patio furniture.
- Clear the path. The driver will be carrying a hose from the truck to that pipe. A clear walkway matters most in winter, when snow and ice can make a short walk slippery.
- Know your tank size. Most homeowners can find it printed on a label on the tank itself or on an old delivery ticket. It helps you decide between a fill and a specific number of gallons.
- Read the gauge. Most tanks have a simple float gauge on top that shows roughly how full it is. Jot down the reading before and after your first delivery so you have a baseline for next time.
- Mention anything unusual. A locked gate, a dog in the yard, or a fill pipe in a hard-to-find spot is worth noting when you order.
Keep your delivery tickets, too. Over a season or two, they build a simple record of how much oil your home actually uses, which makes it much easier to decide when to reorder and how much to ask for.
What’s in the Tank: Ultra-Low Sulfur Oil and Bioheat® Fuel
New York was ahead of the curve on cleaner heating oil. In 2012, New York became the first state to require ultra-low sulfur heating oil, with a sulfur content of 15 parts per million or less.
We also offer premium, ultra-low sulfur Bioheat® fuel. Bioheat® fuel is a blend of biodiesel and ultra-low sulfur heating oil made to work in the oil equipment you already have, so there is nothing to convert or replace. If you would like to know more about what goes into your tank, just ask when you order.
More Than Heating Oil: HVAC and Plumbing Services
A lot of homeowners are surprised to learn that their oil company can also take care of the system that burns it. We are a full-service heating and cooling service provider, which means annual maintenance, repairs, and new system installations for heating and air conditioning, all under one roof. We handle plumbing work as well, so a lot of the household calls that come up during the colder months can go to one number.
Routine service is where most of the value is. The ENERGY STAR program advises a yearly check-up before each season, pointing out that it’s best to check the cooling system in the spring and the heating system in the fall. A tune-up gives a technician the chance to spot a worn part before it turns into a no-heat call during a February cold snap.
Safety is part of the picture too. Any home with a fuel-burning appliance needs working carbon monoxide alarms, and New York’s consumer protection officials advise that there should be a carbon monoxide alarm on every floor of a home. If you are not sure yours are working, test them when you schedule your fall service.
Help Around the Clock
Heating problems rarely keep business hours. We offer 24/7 emergency service along with routine maintenance, so if your system quits on a Saturday night in February, you are not stuck waiting until Monday to reach someone.
Why a Family-Owned Oil Company Feels Different
Big regional providers can do a fine job. But a family-owned company tends to feel different in ways that matter when the house is cold. The people answering the phone know the area. Decisions get made by people who live and work here, not by a call center several states away. And a family business that has been around for decades understands that its reputation is only as good as the last delivery.
That shows up in small ways: straightforward pricing you can check before you order, drivers who know the difference between Hauppauge and Hampton Bays traffic, and a willingness to answer the same question twice without making you feel rushed. It is not complicated. It is just how we have always done things.
